How Long Do Soy Candles Burn? Burn Time by Size, Explained

A container soy candle burns roughly 4 to 6 hours per ounce of wax. A 300g (10.5 oz) soy candle like ours runs about 50 hours under recommended conditions. The exact number depends on the wick, the fragrance load, the vessel — and, more than anything, on how you burn it.

These estimates assume a properly wicked container soy candle, burned in sessions long enough for a full melt pool:

Weight matters more than the vessel's apparent size. A heavy vessel can make a candle look bigger than its wax content — check the net wax weight, not the silhouette.

Do soy candles burn longer than paraffin?

Yes — typically 30–50% longer for the same wax weight. Soy wax melts at a lower temperature than paraffin, so the flame consumes it more slowly. The same property is why soy releases fragrance gradually instead of in a burst: the melt pool stays cooler, and the scent structure survives the burn.

The trade-off is that soy is a softer, more temperature-sensitive wax — which affects shelf life and storage, a separate question from burn time.

What changes the number

Wick size. A wick that is too large for the vessel burns hot and fast — it can cut total burn time by a third. Too small, and the candle tunnels instead of burning at all. This is set at manufacture; you can't change it, but it's why identical-weight candles from different makers burn for different lengths.

Fragrance load. More fragrance oil means a softer wax blend that burns faster. Most quality soy candles carry 6–10% fragrance; ours are at 8% — enough for a full scent throw without shortening the burn.

Session length. Burns shorter than a full melt pool waste wax to tunneling — the single most common reason a 50-hour candle dies at 30. Burns longer than 4 hours overheat the wick and consume wax faster than the fragrance can keep up.

Wick maintenance. An untrimmed wick grows a carbon head, and a bigger flame burns more wax per hour. Trim to ¼ inch before every relight.

Drafts. A flame that leans burns unevenly and faster. Still air is slower air.

Vessel material. The vessel sets the thermal environment of the burn. Concrete absorbs and distributes heat more evenly than glass, which keeps the melt pool consistent from edge to edge — one reason we cast ours in concrete.
