The concrete vessel feels cool and solid in your hands, and the scent—whether it's Lavendure 21 or Sandalure 18—is already present in the room.
It’s tempting to just light it up and walk away, but a high-quality soy candle deserves a little ritual to ensure it performs its best. Because our candles are hand-poured using 100% natural soy wax and cotton wicks, treating them right will not only make them safer but significantly extend their burn time (up to 60 hours!).
Here is your ultimate guide to mastering the art of the perfect burn.
1. The First Burn is the Most Important
If you only follow one rule, make it this one: Create a memory ring.
Soy wax has a "memory." If you light your candle for a short period the first time—say, 30 minutes—and blow it out before the melted wax reaches the edges of the concrete vessel, the wax will harden with a "ring."
Future burns will struggle to melt past that ring, creating a tunnel down the center of the candle. This wastes precious wax and ruins the aesthetic.
-
The Fix: On your very first light, allow the candle to burn for at least 2–3 hours, or until the melt pool reaches the concrete edge.
2. Trim Your Wick (Every Single Time)
Before you relight your candle, always check the wick. Because we use natural cotton wicks, they can "mushroom" (form a small carbon ball at the top) after a long burn.
-
Why trim? A long or mushroomed wick creates a larger flame. This causes the candle to burn too hot and too fast, leading to excess soot and diminishing the fragrance quality.
-
The Rule: Trim the wick to ¼ inch (approx. 6mm) before every lighting. You can use a wick trimmer or just pinch off the charred tip with your fingers once the candle is completely cool.
3. Watch the Clock: The 4-Hour Rule
It might be tempting to leave your candle burning all day, but for the longevity of the scent and the safety of the vessel, it’s best to burn in intervals.
-
Limit burns to 4 hours. After 4 hours, the liquid wax pool can become too deep (overheating the wick) and the fragrance oils can burn off too quickly.
-
Concrete Vessel Care: Our signature concrete vessels are durable, but they retain heat. Giving the candle a break allows the wax to solidify again, preserving the structure. If you love having a scent all day, we recommend rotating between two candles, such as our Signature Concrete Candle Gift Set, so one can cool while the other burns.
4. Stop the Drafts
If you notice your flame flickering wildly or smoking, it’s likely caught in a draft. Air currents from open windows, fans, or AC vents can cause the flame to dance around.
-
The Result: Uneven burning (one side of the vessel melts faster than the other) and black soot marks on the concrete vessel.
-
The Fix: Move your candle to a still, calm area to ensure a steady, upright flame.
5. Extinguish with Intention
Blowing out a candle is the most common method, but it’s not the best—especially for a premium soy candle. Blowing can send hot wax flying and creates a trail of grey smoke that overtakes the beautiful scent you just filled the room with.
-
Use a Snuffer: A bell snuffer cuts off oxygen gently.
-
The Dip Method: Use a wick dipper (or a metal tool) to gently bend the lit wick into the melted wax pool to extinguish it, then immediately straighten it back up. This eliminates smoke entirely and primes the wick with wax for the next burn!
6. Know When to Say Goodbye
We know it’s hard to let go, but for safety reasons, you should stop burning your candle when there is about ½ inch of wax remaining at the bottom. Burning past this point can overheat the base of the concrete vessel and potentially damage the surface underneath it.
7. Don't Throw It Away: Repurpose!
After the final burn, the concrete stays. That was always the intention. The vessel is designed to outlast the candle — not as a bonus, but as the point. Once your candle is finished:
-
Pour hot water into the vessel to melt the remaining wax residue.
-
Wipe it clean.
-
Reuse it! It makes a perfect planter for succulents, a holder for makeup brushes, or a minimalist desk organizer.
